 Young Artist Seminar: Woodwinds Faculty

William McMullen - oboe (both YAS and JSS)

William McMullen , oboe, is an Associate Professor of Oboe at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and is a member of the Moran Quintet. Dr. McMullen holds degrees from Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music and the Julliard School, where he was a scholarship student of Thomas Stacy, English Horn soloist of the New York Philharmonic. A recording of Twentieth Century British music for oboe and piano has been recently released by Crystal Records.


Stephanie Zelnic - clarinet

Stephanie Zelnick has worked as a freelance and orchestral clarinetist throughout the United States and Europe. She is currently serving as principal clarinet in the Greeley Philharmonic, Central City Opera, and the Aspen Chorale Society as well as performing with the Colorado Symphony, Colorado Chamber Players, Cheyenne Symphony, and the Denver Center Theater Company. In her time as a freelance musician she has performed with everyone from Pavarotti to the Beach Boys!

Ms. Zelnick graduated from Rice University with Bachelors Degree in clarinet performance. She received an Artist Diploma from the Academy for the Performing Arts in Prague as a Fulbright Scholar. She served as principal clarinetist of the Czech Chamber Philharmonic. She also toured throughout Europe as a freelance clarinetist and served with the Prague Opera, the Johann Strauss Opera in Vienna, and the Frantisbad Symphony Orchestra in the Czech Republic. Ms. Zelnick earned a MM degree from University of Northern Colorado. She has taught at The Florida State University and the University of Northern Colorado.

In the United States Ms. Zelnick has performed with many ensembles, including the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, the Aspen Chamber and Festival Orchestras and the Crested Butte Chamber Festival. She has also appeared as a soloist with several ensembles including the Boulder Concert Band and the University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra, where she currently teaches the clarinet studio.


Deborah Torp - bassoon

Deborah Torp performs bassoon and contrabassoon with the Central City Opera, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, and Mercury Ensemble, among others. For many years, Ms. Torp has maintained a teaching studio in the Denver area and coaches the bassoon students at Arapahoe High School. She also performs with the Denver DoubleReed Company bassoon quartet and Opus 5 Wind Quintet. Recently, she performed two new works by Delaware composer/bassoonist Chuck Holdeman, one of which was premiered at the 2003 International Double Reed Society conference in Greensboro, North Carolina. She has performed with numerous festivals throughout the world, and was a member of the Colorado Ballet Orchestra and the Boulder Philharmonic for many year.

 

Junior Student Seminar: Woodwinds Faculty

Claudia Anderson - flute, theory & wind ensemble

Claudia Anderson has toured the United States and Europe as solo recitalist, as well as guest artist and clinician for numerous state and regional flute festivals. Dr. Anderson received her D.M.A. in flute performance from the University of Iowa and has taught at the Universities of Iowa and Northern Iowa, Ithica College, Grinnell College and the University of California at Santa Barbara. She has recorded for the Golden Crest, Centaur, CRI and Neuma labels.

Claudia Anderson's brilliance and originality as a solo performer have graced audiences in the U.S., Europe and South America since the early 1970's. She participated in the world premiere of Leonard Bernsten's Mass. She also studied in Italy on a Fulbright scholarship and remained there several

years to play principal flute in the Orchestra del Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

 


Karen Greg - bassoon

Karen Gregg, bassoon, received her Masters' and Doctorate Degrees in Bassoon Performance from the Ohio State University, and her Bachelor of Music Performance Degree from the University of Northern Colorado. She has been an active performer and teacher in Ohio and Colorado and is currently the Director of Bands at Lyons High School in Lyons, Colorado. She maintains an active and successful studio of private students, and they have been accepted to programs such as the Interlochen Summer Academy, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Northern Colorado. Karen continues to perform regularly on bassoon and contrabassoon in orchestras across Northern Colorado and Wyoming.
